Barbara “Denice” Ward passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Denice was born in Gordonsville, VA, to the late Harvey Fray and Barbara Etta Trainum.
Denice has been a resident of Hinesville, GA, since 1994 with her husband, "Tom" Thomas A. Ward, for 42 years. She was a long-time member of Ludowici United Methodist Church, where she participated in the choir and women’s Sunday services. Denice dedicated her life to nursing. As an LPN, she graduated from Savannah Tech and began working as a hospice nurse, with her favorite field being hospice. She later went back to complete her RN. She was well known throughout the community after teaching at Savannah Tech for nearly 10 years. She taught CNA, lab tech, and LPN courses as well as a clinical instructor in the surrounding areas.
Denice is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Ward III of Hinesville, GA, her three children: daughter Jennifer Evans of Hinesville, GA; son Ryan Burton (Michelle); and son Micah Burton, both of Hinesville, GA. Denice had six grandchildren: Timothy Slack (Maria) of Atlanta, GA; Katelynn Shearin Cardenas (Jacob) of Greenville, NC. Avi Evans of Hinesville, GA, Justin Burton of Hinesville, GA, Hannah Evans of Statesboro, GA, McKenna Burton of Hinesville, GA, and four great-grandchildren: Bella Slack of Atlanta, GA, Vladimir “Vlad” Slack of Atlanta, GA, Grayson Burton of Hinesville, GA, and Allie Shearin of Greenville, NC.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, starting at 6 p.m to 8 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Ludowici Methodist Church located at 328 S Main St, Ludowici, GA 31316 with Rev. Walt Peton officiating.
Denice will lie in state for an hour before the service.
Burial will follow the service at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia, at 1 p.m.
After the burial, there will be a celebration of life held at the Ludowici Methodist Church.
