Lourdes Rodriguez Espino passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Hospice of Savannah. Lourdes was born to Suzanna Rodriguez in Puerto Rico and moved to New York City as an infant. A New Yorker at heart, lovingly indicated by the “Big apple” gold necklace she wore with pride. Lourdes moved to Hinesville, GA in 1970. Where she would spend the next 56 years of her life raising her family.
Throughout her life, Lourdes was known for her kindness, generosity, hard work, abundant faith, and fiercely strong will. Lourdes was known in the community through her children’s school years, as a fiercely protective “mama bear,” with a stern hand. But above all, the lady with a big heart. A red heart being a symbol for Lourdes to the point everything she owned was marked by a red heart. From her car, to her trash can and on the mailbox outside her house. The fastest way to locate something belonging to Lourdes was to look for the red heart.
Lourdes was a long-time member of Westside Baptist Church, where she faithfully paid her tithes on everything she ever received. She always claimed to be very spiritual but not religious. She was a devoted friend, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Yolanda McInnis (Gordon) of Florida; L.Ivette Zimmerman (Robert) of Kentucky; son, Alexander A. Wellington of Florida and Bonus Daughter, Billie Ann Gaskin (Byrum) of Georgia. Grandchildren; Nina Beck-Balser (Ryan) of Indiana, Vincent Barnett of Kentucky; Tyler Espino-Bridgess of North Carolina, and Joanna McInnis of Georgia. Great-grandchildren; Philip, Tristan, William, and Liam of Indiana, Lillian and Aurelia of Kentucky and Bonus Granddaughters, Taylor and Kayla. Sisters; Isabel Cortez of Puerto Rico and Blanca Ruiz Swindell of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Espino.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Carter Funeral Home, 308 W. Oglethorpe Hwy, Hinesville, GA. A memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. in the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
The family extends their gratitude to the caregivers of Your Family Hospice for their support during her final days. And the peace in which they provided.
Lourdes will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
